Iron Messenger groups and channels now hold up to 500 members each, ten times the old limit of 50. It is free, it needs no Premium, and a room of 500 keeps every feature a chat of five has: polls, articles, comments, moderation commands and scheduled posts. This post explains why the limit used to be 50, what we rebuilt so that a room can grow, and what you notice when a room fills up.
How many members can an Iron Messenger group have?
Up to 500. The number is the same for a group, where everybody writes, and for a channel, where the hosts post and everybody else reads. You do not pay for it, and nothing else about the room changes when it grows: the owner still hands out rights person by person, Iron Help commands like /mute 10m still work, and polls still have their six switches.
For scale: at the time of writing (October 2026), a Telegram group holds up to 200,000 people and a WhatsApp group up to 1,024. Iron Messenger is still not the app for a stadium. Five hundred is a school year, a big fan club, a neighbourhood, a small company or a gaming community, which is the kind of room where people at least know who runs it. Our honest comparison with Telegram and WhatsApp has the rest of the differences.
Why was the limit 50?
Because every member cost something on every message. Iron Messenger runs on one small server on purpose: it is how the app stays free with no ads and no feed. Before this change, one message in a group meant:
- a separate notification request for every phone of every member, so a group of 50 people with two devices each was a hundred requests per message;
- a separate live update for every member who had the app open;
- the whole member list, sent along with the chat every time somebody's chat list loaded.
At 50 members that is nothing. At 500 it is ten times the work on every single message, and at a few thousand one busy room would slow down the chats of everybody else on the server. So the limit stayed at 50 until the cost of a message stopped growing with the size of the room.
Your club is bigger than 50? Bring all of it. Groups and channels of up to 500 are free on every tier.
What we changed so a room can grow
A big room is now one thing, not a list of its members. Three changes make that work.
One notification per message
When a room reaches 500 members, every member's phone joins one shared address for that room at the push service. A new message is one request to that address, and the push service delivers it to every phone at once. Your own phone is left out, and so is the phone of anybody who muted the room. A notification for a big room is kept for one hour, so a phone that was off all night does not wake up to a pile of yesterday's posts.
The message travels inside the notification
If the app is open when a notification for a big room arrives, the notification already carries the message, compressed. The app puts it into the chat and onto the chat list and downloads nothing. A very long post does not fit; then only the people who have that chat on screen load it, spread over a few seconds so that they do not all knock at the same moment.
Live updates only while you read
The live connection that makes a message appear the moment it is sent now works room by room: your app listens to a big room only while that room is on screen. Close the chat and the notification takes over. Edits and reactions show up live for the people reading, and everybody else sees them when they open the chat.
The member list changed too. A big room no longer sends all 500 people with every chat list. It sends the hosts (the owner, the admins and anybody with rights of their own) and you, and every other person's name and photo come with their messages.
What you notice in a room of 500
- The member list loads in pages. It opens with the hosts, then shows 50 people at a time, with a "Show more" button and a search by name or @handle.
- @mentions search the whole room as you type, not only the people on your screen.
- "Is typing" is off. In a room of 500 somebody is always typing, and the line would never go away.
- The unread counter stops at 999+. A badge is not the place for a five-digit number.
- Read ticks still work in groups, and "seen by" still shows who read your message.
- Older versions of the app still work in a big room, but they show people outside the host list by their first letter instead of their photo. Update the app to see everybody's name and face.
Muting works as before: a muted room sends your phone nothing at all, and its messages still wait for you in the chat. Our guide to group chats without the chaos covers slow mode, the newcomer allowance and the other tools that keep a big group readable.

Will groups get bigger than 500?
Maybe, and not on a guess. The new design does not get more expensive as a room grows, but a design is a claim until it is measured. Before the limit goes up again, we will fill a test room with tens of thousands of members on a server the same size as ours and measure how long a chat list takes to load, what one message costs and how much memory the live connections need. If the numbers hold, the limit goes up. If they do not, it stays at 500, and we will say why. There is no date.
Until then, 500 is a lot of room. If you are starting a broadcast, read how to start a channel. If you are new here, what is Iron Messenger covers the rest of the app.
Questions people ask
How many members can an Iron Messenger group have?
An Iron Messenger group can have up to 500 members, and so can a channel. The limit is free and the same on every tier; it used to be 50.
Do I need Premium for a big group in Iron Messenger?
No. Groups and channels of up to 500 members are free in Iron Messenger. Premium adds decoration, such as reactions and themes, not room size.
Why does Iron Messenger hide who is typing in a big group?
In an Iron Messenger room of 500 members somebody is almost always typing, so the line would never go away. Typing is still shown in smaller groups and in one-on-one chats.
Will Iron Messenger groups get bigger than 500 members?
Possibly. Iron Messenger raises the limit again only after a load test with tens of thousands of members on a server the size of its own, and there is no date yet.
