A disappearing photo in Iron Messenger is a picture you send with a viewing budget: one look, or a countdown of 3, 5 or 30 seconds. It arrives blurred, the clock starts when the other person opens it, and once the last recipient has seen it the file is deleted from our servers, not just hidden in the app. It is free on every plan.
How do disappearing photos work in Iron Messenger?
Attaching a photo does not send it straight away. It lands in the composer first, where you can add a caption and pick how long the other side gets to look at it. Leave it on "keep" and it is an ordinary photo. Pick a budget and it becomes a disappearing one.
In the chat, the photo shows up blurred, with a small badge: "one look", "5 s" and so on. The recipient decides when to open it. The moment they do, the timer starts, and when it runs out the photo comes apart on their screen. The caption is ordinary text, so it stays in the thread after the picture is gone. Handy for "guess where I am" and less handy for anything you wanted kept.
It works the same in a one-on-one chat and in a group chat: every member gets one look of their own, and the file goes once the last of them has had it.
One look, 3, 5 or 30 seconds: which one to pick?
The budgets are deliberately few. A dial that runs to an hour is just a normal photo with extra steps.
- One look. No countdown. The photo stays open while they look at it and ends the moment they leave it. Best for the picture that needs a proper read: a receipt, a screenshot, a long text on a whiteboard.
- 3 seconds. A glimpse. The new haircut before the reveal, the face you pulled at 7 a.m.
- 5 seconds. Enough to get the joke in a meme without being able to study it.
- 30 seconds. For something with detail: a sketch, a room you want an opinion on, a map scribble.
Only photos can carry a budget. Videos, stickers and plain text cannot, because the server cannot promise the same thing about them, and a promise it cannot keep is worse than none.
Send a photo that does not stick around. Free on every plan, on Android, Windows and the web.
What actually gets deleted, and when?
This is the part that matters, so here it is without marketing:
- The server decides who has looked. Opening the photo records a view. The image link is only handed to someone who has not viewed it yet, and that includes you, the sender. You can check what you sent once, like everybody else.
- The file is deleted when the last recipient has looked. Not a flag that hides it in the app, not "removed eventually". The bytes leave our storage in the same step that records the final view, and nothing on our side can find that file again.
- An unopened photo gets 7 days. If nobody ever taps it, it is deleted after a week instead of living the ordinary 90 days a normal photo gets on the free plan.
- It cannot be forwarded. A forward would give the photo to people you never offered it to, so the app refuses it.
For comparison: an ordinary photo on the free plan is kept for 90 days, and clips and GIFs for 30. With Premium, your media does not expire while you subscribe. Deleting a message removes its photo or video from storage right away, whatever the plan. More in how Iron Messenger handles your privacy.
Why are disappearing photos free?
Two reasons, and either one would be enough.
First, privacy is never a paid feature in Iron Messenger. "Who gets to keep this picture" is exactly the kind of control that has to belong to everyone, not to whoever pays. The same goes for Ghost Mode, the hidden @handle and the Stranger Airlock.
Second, it is the only feature in the app that makes our storage bill go down. An ordinary photo sits on a disk for months. A disappearing one is gone the minute it has been seen. Charging you for helping us save space would be a strange business model. Premium sells decoration instead: loud themes, every emoji as a reaction, more sticker packs. You can read the whole split in what Iron Messenger is and what Premium adds.
What can a disappearing photo not do?
Every "view once" feature has the same hole, and we would rather say it than have you find out the hard way: anyone can photograph their screen with another phone. No app can stop that, on any platform.
We also do not block screenshots. We tried a screenshot shield once, tested it on real phones, and it did not reliably black anything out. A lock that only works sometimes is a false sense of safety, so it was removed and there is no screenshot setting in the app at all. Treat a disappearing photo as a courtesy between people who trust each other a bit, not as a vault.
And one detail about groups: if someone joins after you sent the photo, the 7-day limit is what deletes it in the end, not their view.
Know exactly what happens to your photos. The privacy policy says it in plain words, no lawyer needed.
How to send a disappearing photo
- Open a chat and tap the paperclip.
- Pick a photo. It lands in the composer instead of sending.
- Add a caption if you like. Remember, the caption stays after the photo is gone.
- Choose the budget: one look, 3 s, 5 s or 30 s.
- Send. The other side sees a blurred photo with a badge, and the clock starts when they open it.
Photos are compressed on your phone before they upload, so even a disappearing one goes through on a weak connection. If your phone is old or your data plan is thin, see how Iron Messenger works on slow internet.
Questions people ask
How do I send a disappearing photo in Iron Messenger?
In an Iron Messenger chat, tap the paperclip, pick a photo, and before sending choose a viewing budget: one look, 3, 5 or 30 seconds. The photo arrives blurred and the timer starts when the other person opens it.
Is a disappearing photo really deleted from the server?
Yes. When the last recipient has looked at it, Iron Messenger deletes the file from its storage in the same step, not just hides it in the app. A photo nobody opens is deleted after 7 days.
Can someone screenshot a disappearing photo?
Yes, and we say so openly. Iron Messenger does not block screenshots, and no app can stop someone photographing the screen with another phone. Treat it as a courtesy, not a vault.
Are disappearing photos a Premium feature?
No. They are free on every plan, like every privacy feature in Iron Messenger.
Can I forward a disappearing photo or see it again?
No. Iron Messenger does not let anyone forward it, and nobody gets a second look, the sender included. The caption is ordinary text and stays in the chat.
